On the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States, members of the United Nations Security Council have said that they are committed to preventing and combating all forms of terrorism. They are still as united in commitment today as they were two decades ago. At the same time, India said that the 9/11 memorial reminds us of our collective resolve to fight terrorism and reject all attempts to justify it.
The 15-member Security Council issued a press statement on Thursday to mark the 20th anniversary of the attacks, recalling that the council immediately condemned the horrific terrorist attacks that took place two decades ago. “Today, members of the Security Council marked the anniversary with a visit to the memorial and museum of the September 11 attack in New York City,” the press statement read. The members of the Security Council are as united today as they were 20 years ago in their commitment to preventing and combating terrorism in all its forms.

Permanent representatives of 15 countries of the Security Council visited the 9/11 Memorial and Museum on 9 September. Ambassador TS Tirumurti, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, told PTI, “It was indeed an exciting experience to be present at Ground Zero in New York on the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks. I paid homage to all the martyrs, including many Indians. The memorial reminds us of our collective resolve to fight terrorism and reject all attempts to justify it.” A Security Council delegation laid a wreath at the memorial in honor of 2,977 people from over 90 countries killed in the terror attacks.
The terrorist attack on September 11, 2001 in America is going to complete 20 years. Thousands of people died in this attack and about 40 billion US dollars in damage was done. Two skyscrapers of the World Trade Center (WTC) in New York City were completely destroyed in the attack. After the building collapsed, its debris was taken to a landfill site called “Fresh Kills”. The bodies were scrutinized in the rubble for several days. But during this time many people became victims of various diseases after coming in the grip of poisonous substances released from it.
