Marine Le Pen of the National Rally and the Socialist Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, officially launched their campaign on Sunday. The 62-year-old Hidalgo, the mayor of the French capital since 2014, is the most preferred candidate for nomination in the Socialist Party.
He started his candidacy from the north-western city of Rouen. Le Pen, 53, leader of the French right-wing party, launched the campaign from the southern city of Frejus, pledging to defend French independence.
He has appointed 26-year-old Jordan Bardella as acting head of the party, which prepares his campaign. With her campaign, she joins a growing list of challengers to incumbent President Emmanuel Macron. Macron, 43, has not yet announced his intention to contest, but is expected to present his candidature.
