The top leadership of the BJP has once again played bets on the name of the ‘unknown’ leader in Gujarat. After Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to power in 2014, the BJP chose a person with low profile and out of limelight, ignoring the names running for the chief minister’s post in most of the states. Not only this, the party leadership has chosen others instead of choosing the leader of the dominant castes.

In fact, the names of Union Ministers Purushottam Rupala, Mansukh Mandaviya, Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel, Saurabh Patel, Govardhan Jhapia and Praful Patel were in discussion for the post of CM in Gujarat.

Similar speculations were also being made in the names of Chief Ministers in Uttarakhand and Karnataka, but the CM was made the leader whose name no one was taking. Similarly, the party surprised everyone by choosing Manohar Lal Khattar and Raghubar Das in Haryana and Jharkhand. Both these leaders do not come from the politically influential castes in their states.

The election of Yogi Adityanath in the 2017 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections was also surprising, while the name of Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha was at the forefront. The appointment of Viplap Kumar Dev in Tripura and Devendra Fadnavis as CM in Maharashtra also shocked the people.

Nitin Patel missed the second time
After the resignation of Anandiben Patel in 2016, the name of Nitin Patel, who had a good hold in the Patidar community, was the frontrunner for the post of CM. Not only this, he had also eaten sweets in front of TV channels, believing himself to be elected CM, but in the end the party high command chose Vijay Rupani of Jain community after cutting his leaf.

Even after Rupani’s resignation, his name was in the forefront. Before the legislature party meeting, a confident Nitin had said that the leader of the legislature party should be popular, strong, experienced and acceptable to all.

The election of a new CM is not just an exercise to fill a vacant post. The state needs a successful leadership so that the state can develop by taking everyone along. This sparked speculations about his name but once again his luck was deceived.

Party leaders including Shah, Rajnath, Nadda congratulated
Senior party leaders, ministers and chief ministers, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP President JP Nadda, congratulated Bhupendra Patel on being elected the leader of the BJP Legislature Party in Gujarat. Shah said that under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and under the leadership of Patel, the development journey of the state would get new energy and momentum. He said that Gujarat would continue to be a leading state in good governance and public welfare works.

After five years, BJP has again handed over the reins of power to the MLA of the same society, Bhupendra Patel, in order to woo the Patidar community, which has been involved in the reservation movement in Gujarat.

Earlier, Anandiben Patel belonged to this community and had to resign in 2016 for not handling the reservation movement properly. The Patidar community in the state is very powerful with money, power and there is a lot of interference in politics. It has an important role in the BJP’s victory campaign in the state.

The Patidar community has the power to change the results of more than 70 assembly seats in the state. In 71 of the 182 assembly seats, the community has 15 per cent or more voters.

Patidars are 1.5 crore out of about 6 crore population of Gujarat. It is estimated to be 12-14 per cent of the population. Of the 48 per cent vote share the BJP got in 2012, 11 per cent were from Patidars. This community, which describes itself as a descendant of Lord Rama, is spread all over the state, but their population is more in North Gujarat and Saurashtra.

Congress supporters first
Earlier this community was a supporter of Congress. In the 1980s, this community was angered by the Congress giving more importance to Kshatriyas, Harijans, Adivasis and Muslims. After this it started supporting the BJP. In 2015, under the leadership of leaders like Hardik Patel, the community launched a movement for reservation for itself under the Other Backward Classes. Violent incidents took place at many places and many leaders of this community were arrested. Due to this the community started drifting away from the BJP.

The disillusionment of the community with the BJP was reflected in the election results. The BJP, which won 115 seats in the 2012 elections, got only 99 seats in 2017. Their vote share also decreased with the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Patidars got 60 per cent votes in 2014 and only 49.1 per cent in 2017 assembly elections.

More space given in Modi cabinet
In the expansion of the Modi cabinet this year, seven people from the state were given place. Among them, Mansukh Mandaviya and Purushottam Rupala, who come from the Patidar community, were made Union Ministers from Minister of State.
